ASK COACH

Q:Since graduating from college with a BS in Commercial Recreation, I have been unable to get even a positive response from any of the sports franchises I have contacted.  Where should I start?

- A.D., Brooklyn

A:First of all, what do you want to do?  You have choices: administration; marketing; facility management; business management.  Second, what sport do you want to work in?  You have choice:  Baseball; basketball; football; hockey.  Third, if you're concentrating on one sport, how deep have you gone?  If it's baseball have you just contacted the major leages?

You need to:

  • Focus on what you want to do
  • Focus on the sport or sports
  • List all (U.S., Canada, Europe, etc.) the franchises, major or minor, of that sport
  • Find all the trade journals, professional organizations and associations for that sport
  • Find out all of the trade shows, meetings and conferences for that sport
  • List the top 100 people in the area that you are most interested in for that sport
  • Now, create a plan that will turn that information into action.  you must:
  1. Develop job search skills
  2. Package yourself to sell
  3. Uncover the unpublished job market
  4. Develop relationships with leaders in the sports industry
  5. Access decision makers
