ASK COACH

Q:Can you give me some suggestions on how to network myself in geographic locations from where I live?

- J.F., Seattle

A:There are other ways to get noticed besides the basic strategies of letters, resumes and phone calls.  First, select the two leading trade journals in your major area of interest and the three top cities in which you would like to work.  Next, place a Position Wanted or Situation Wanted advertisement in the selected Trade journals and the major newspaper of those selected cities.  Be discrete, yet specific.

Use special occasions as unique ways to communicate to decision makers.  Send small gifts or hand-written notes when you see their name in the news.

Build a library of contacts, directories and resources in your Special Interest Group.  Nurture your contacts by communicating uniquely.  Find out all the hot buttons of your decision maker.  Send cards or emails for birthdays, anniversaries, kid's graduation, and holidays.  Send tickets for major events.

Sound crazy?  ..Those who get noticed, get hired!
